Notes

This is the first of the six large works Bach wrote for solo violin, three sonatas and three partitas. Although not as often as the lute suites, they have been constantly transcribed for guitar. This first movement is a free flowing introduction, mainly a bunch of chords separated by fast runs and ornaments. Reading it will be difficult, with a lot of very difficult rhythms, which although played with a sense of rubato, should still be approximated. Many of the chords and transitions are difficult, particularly the chord on the downbeat of the 12th measure. There are a few options for playing it: 1. Having a large enough hand to barre the first fret and still reach the Bb - 2. Using the cello technique of bringing your thumb around the neck to play the bass note, although keeping the C and F for the full length will be difficult still - or 3. Play the F and release it after, rolling the chord, which is what the violin would do there anyhow.
